Litecoin (LTC) ist ein Peer-to-Peer-Projekt für Kryptowährung und Open Source Software, das unter der Lizenz MIT / X11 veröffentlicht wurde. Die Erstellung und Übertragung von Münzen basiert auf einem Open-Source-Verschlüsselungsprotokoll und wird nicht von einer zentralen Behörde verwaltet. Obwohl Litecoin von Bitcoin (BTC) inspiriert und in den meisten Bereichen technisch nahezu identisch ist, hat es einige technische Unterschiede im Vergleich zu Bitcoin und anderen wichtigen Kryptowährungen, wie zum Beispiel die Verwendung von Segregated Witness und das Lightning Network. Diese ermöglichen es effektiv, dass eine größere Anzahl von Transaktionen vom Netzwerk in einer bestimmten Zeit verarbeitet wird, was potentielle Engpässe, wie bei Bitcoin gesehen, verringert. Litecoin wurde am 7. Oktober 2011 von Charlie Lee, einem ehemaligen Google-Mitarbeiter, über einen Open-Source-Client auf GitHub veröffentlicht. Das Litecoin-Netzwerk ging am 13. Oktober 2011 live.
Im November 2013 verzeichnete der Gesamtwert von Litecoin ein massives Wachstum, das einen Sprung von 100% innerhalb von 24 Stunden beinhaltete.
Litecoin erreichte im November 2013 eine Marktkapitalisierung von 1 Mrd. USD. Am 16. August 2017 beträgt die Marktkapitalisierung US $ 2.253.184.567 bei ungefähr $ 42.94 pro Münze.
Im Mai 2017 wurde Litecoin der erste der Top-5-Kryptowährungen (nach Marktkapitalisierung), der segregated witness durchführte. Später im Mai desselben Jahres wurde die erste Lightning Network-Transaktion durch litecoin abgeschlossen und in weniger als einer Sekunde 0,00000001 LTC von Zürich nach San Francisco transferiert.
Anfang September hatte Litecoin seinen Rekordstand von 92,07 $ pro Münze erreicht. Die jüngsten regulatorischen Durchsetzungsmaßnahmen in China brachten eine Abwärtsbewegung bis zum 14. September auf ein Tief von etwa 46,04 $ pro Münze.
